Fractals

What are Fractals?

Fractals are a price action based indicator introduced by Bill Williams. They identify swing highs and swing lows using a 5-candle pattern, helping traders detect potential reversals, market structure points, and support/resistance zones.

A Bullish (Up) Fractal forms when the middle candle has the highest high among the five candles.
A Bearish (Down) Fractal forms when the middle candle has the lowest low among the five candles.

How to Add Fractals?

  1. Click on the "+" button in the Indicators section.
  2. Select Fractals.
  3. Choose the data source (must include OHLC values).
  4. Configure the Time Frame and Length.
  5. Click "Add" to save the indicator.

Configurable Parameters in Fractals

1. On Data (Source Selection)

  • Fractals require OHLC candle data because they rely on High and Low values.
  • If multiple sources exist, select the candle dataset to evaluate fractals on.
  • If no source is chosen, the main Candle Data is used by default.

2. Time Frame

  • Defines the timeframe used to calculate Fractals.
  • Example: If set to 15, fractals will be detected on 15-minute candles.

3. Length

Length determines how many candles on each side of the center candle are checked when forming a fractal.

  • A Bullish Fractal is confirmed when the middle candle's high is higher than the highs of the selected number of candles on both sides.
  • A Bearish Fractal is confirmed when the middle candle's low is lower than the lows of the selected number of candles on both sides.

A higher Length produces stronger but fewer fractals, while a lower Length results in more frequent but weaker fractal signals.

Applying Fractals on Other Candle Types

Fractals can be applied to any candle dataset that includes High and Low values.

Example

You can apply Fractals on Heikin-Ashi, Renko-derived candles, or any custom OHLC dataset.

Element Name

Each Fractals indicator is assigned a unique Element Name to help you manage multiple indicators.

Use Cases for Fractals

  • Market Structure Detection
→ Identify swing highs and lows for trend understanding.

  • Reversal Zones
→ A new fractal can signal potential reversal points.

  • Breakout Levels
→ Breaking above a Bearish (Up) Fractal or below a Bullish (Down) Fractal may indicate breakout setups.

  • Stop-Loss Placement
→ Traders often place SL beyond the latest fractal high/low.
